Bureau of Alchol Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Badge

The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, and Firearms quietly released an update into the registry to streamline the crossing of state lines.  It signals a bit of a shift inside ATF that we have been watching over the past year.  It also signals that the ATF is finally working toward entering the 21st century.

Since the inception of the National Firearms Act (1934) it has placed onerous requirements on the owners of various items.  Short Barreled Rifles (SBRS), Short Barreled Shotguns (SBS), and Machine Guns require the owners to notify the ATF if they travel with these items out of state.  In the past this had to be done with snail mail and paper forms notifying the agency of the owner’s intentions.

Now the ATF is proposing to update this requirement to an electronic form finally.  This is part of a wider redesign of the ATF internally.  They have been slowly updating process moving from paper forms to digital ones.  While the restriction of the NFA still remain in place (passed by congress this law requires congressional or judicial override to remove them) it is a step towards a more modern application of the law.

The Trump Administration has been all over the place when it comes to gun rights.  They have brought much needed updating and modernization inside the ATF in instances like this.  They have also reversed course on many infringements and even taken pro-2A arguments to Federal Judges.  However, they have also stood behind long standing gun control tenants such as recently defending the existence of the National Firearms Act against pro-gun groups efforts to remove the archaic and ineffective law.

We here at 2 If By Sea Tactical applauds this move to make things easier on gun owners and will continue to push this administration to roll back gun laws.  The momentum and moment is now for us to reestablish our birthright and the 2nd Amendment.  Lets hope the Trump Administration will seize on this moment and reverse course on their missteps.
