Minnesota Pushes Sweeping Gun Control Package — SF 4067 Moves Forward

Minnesota lawmakers just took a major step toward one of the most aggressive gun control packages the state has ever seen. This is what has been building since Governor Tim Walz (D) has pushed for a special session on “gun violence” back in the fall.
This package came fast and was split along party lines. On Monday, the Minnesota Senate passed SF 4067 by a razor-thin 34–33 vote, with zero crossover support. Branded as a “gun violence prevention package,” the bill is anything but narrow. It’s a sweeping overhaul of firearm laws in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. It now heads to the Minnesota House
What’s in the Bill
This is a sweeping and comprehensive list of gun control initiatives. This list includes:
Ban on commonly owned semi-auto firearms, including AR-15 style rifles
Ban on magazines over 17 rounds
Ban on home-built firearms and unfinished receivers
New restrictions on 3D-printed firearms
Ban on binary triggers
Expanded “red flag” laws
Increased funding for enforcement of those laws
Stricter firearm storage requirements
Expansion of gun-free zones, including school-related events
The 2026 Minnesota Senate, in violation of state law, passed this sweeping package inside its hue omnibus bill after months of stalemates.
The Red Flag Expansion
One of the biggest shifts? Expanding state red flag laws. SF 4067 would broaden who can file for firearm confiscation. It also extends how long rights can be removed without due process. Finally, it increases funding to enforce those orders.
This is something we’ve seen in other states, these laws operate outside traditional due process. Removal of constitutional rights without due process under our constitution is illegal.
Self-Defense Concerns
Beyond ownership bans, the bill also begins to chip away at self-defense rights. With expanded gun-free zones and new restrictions on where and how firearms can be carried. Us law-abiding citizens are the ones that will face more limitations and not the criminals that ignore laws.
The Reality Check
There is something in all of this that is not talked about enough. Minnesota already has relatively low gun crime rates. Outside of Minneapolis, we are not a state with deep issues of gun violence. We also already have as a state extensive firearm regulations.
This includes the removal of private sales back in2023 by the state legislature and the creation of red flag laws. We also have restrictions on triggers, home built firearms, and other accessories far beyond our neighbors. Yet it is never enough for the anti-gun politicians in charge of our state.
What Happens Next
Now our focus shifts to the Minnesota House. This is where the battle will play out in a chamber that is evenly divided 50-50. This bill is far from guaranteed from passing. However, it takes just one defection to make to become law.
By tying gun control to funding of other critical items int his state it is possible a representative could cave. The hope is at minimum this bill is amended to remove all of these provisions but that might be wishful thinking. However, Minnesota has seen Senate-passed gun control bills die in the House before.
This is what we here at 2 If By Sea Tactical have been warning about for months. We are at a crossroads in the state. Gun control has become a national push and states like ours are especially vulnerable to them. Virginia was the warning sign and we are on the verge of getting that here.
Regardless of comes out of this legislative session this year, gun control groups are pouring money into Minnesota trying to flip this state. If that happens, our rights are toast. Despite the rumors that the Supreme Court has already ruled on these issues, that is simply not the case.
SF 4067 represents what many in our state have been working on for years, a push toward broader firearm bans and expanded government authority over gun ownership. It has been getting closer and closer to passing and now it is only one vote away. This November could remove that barrier depending on how the state goes.
Us gun owners have a job to do. First, we must contact our representatives. Second, we most support gun rights groups like the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus. Third, we must not comply when our rights are threatened. This last one is scary and hard to do. It puts us in direct conflict with our government.
The biggest thing we can do now is get all of us to vote in unison this November and hold those accountable who violate our rights. We need to keep pressure on those who do as well to keep defending us. Our rights literally hang in the balance, and we are just one vote away from their possible permanent removal
