Minnesota's Special Session on Gun Control Is It About to Happen?

Minnesota has seen a series of tragedies rock our state. First there was the targeted assassination of DFL House Leader Melissa Hortman and her husband. Then there was the horrific targeting of children by a transgender man at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. Following these events, DFL Governor Tim Walz has been attempting to call a special session on “Gun Control” to ban various commonly owned firearms and accessories in the United States.
As of this article the special session has not been called yet in the state. This due to the slim DFL margins in the State Senate, 33 (DFL) – 32 (Repub. -2 (Vacant), and the house a 67-67 split. Governor Walz has been unable to find any movement among both his party, and the Republicans. His unwillingness to address just the school safety issue has stalled the special session making it increasingly unlikely that it will happen.
Since coming into power in 2016, Governor Walz has taken a chisel to the 2nd Amendment in this state by banning Forced Reset Triggers (FRT’s) and Binary Triggers in 2024 (recently ruled unconstitutional by a Judge in 2025. They also enacted so called “Red Flag Laws” in 2023. And have repeatedly attempt to pass an “Assault Weapons Ban” since 2022 often failing by one or two votes.

With the repeated attacks on the 2nd Amendment, it is no surprise that that is the line in the sand going after the fundamental rights to secure our democracy. While he tragedies that we have all witnessed deserve real solutions to prevent, the current thinking out of the Governor’s Mansion is not the solutions that will prove to have any real change. School security and protecting our politicians by providing the necessary security they require would have a greater impact.
When it comes to the commonly owned firearms, such as the AR-15, the amount of crime in which they are the weapon of choice is minuscule. Even with the Hortman assassination, a handgun was the weapon that was used. When it comes to real solutions, we must take a look at what the realities are and work in those confines. For instance, there are approximately as many as 500 million firearms in the United States. The solutions we seek have to take into account the existence of firearms.
The Founding Fathers understood what they were doing when they inserted the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution. They had just successfully led an armed rebellion over the largest and best trained military the World had ever seen to that point. They understood the implications, and dangers that such a stance would mean. However, they deemed the rewards and values of Freedom were greater than any risks.
This does not exempt common decency and respect for our fellow man. While there are many policy positions that deserve discussion and ratification such as hardening the schools, enforcing existing laws, harsher penalties for repeat offenders, etc. We must start with coming together and treating each other with respect and decency. Overreliance on government is part of the problem. We cannot legislate evil nor eliminate bad behavior.
Our first step towards healing and real solutions is to come together as a country and find some common values with our fellow citizens. From there we can pursue good faith and real solutions that will positively affect our society. I pray one day we will see such a change.
