There has been a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice against the U.S. Virgin Islands for violating the 2nd Amendment as it pertains to their citizens. This is a first of its kind lawsuit and could possibly see the 14th Amendment applied to U.S. territories and not just states. The Virgin Islands have one of the most oppressive Gun Control regimes in the territories. They require character references and extensive licensing, fingerprinting and other infringements on gun owners.
This is all despite being a U.S. Territory since 1917 when the U.S. purchased them from Denmark. This lawsuit comes out of Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon who was put in charge of the Trump Administrations new 2nd Amendment civil rights division. This will be an interesting case to watch as it works its way through the courts.
If successful, this will effectively force all U.S. Territories such as American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico to follow the 2nd Amendment and Federal Gun laws. This would be a huge win for their citizens as many of these territories are stricken with high crime. It would give them a chance to defend themselves as well as ease the burden on other U.S. citizens traveling there for vacations.
This also continues a pattern for this administration for going after State and Territorial Gun Laws while also defending Federal Gun laws. This has made gun owners frustrated as, while we applaud moves like this lawsuit or arguing against Assault Weapons Bans, we also denounce defending Federal Gun Laws. We hope the administration will reverse course and expand rights for ALL Americans. Check out our Youtube video on this issue.
