Quiet Win on Capitol Hill Protects Hunting Traditions from Federal Overreach

While most eyes are focused on high-profile gun control battles, a major win for hunters and Second Amendment supporters just happened. This came about without much media attention. Last week, lawmakers in Congress moved to fix a serious problem buried inside the House Farm Bill, officially known as the Farm, Food and National Security Act of 2026.
If they hadn’t? It would have severely restricted—or outright ended—many long-standing hunting practices in America. This would have been another attack on the Second Amendment.
What Was the Problem?
Earlier versions of the bill included language pulled from the so-called “Greyhound Protection Act of 2025.” On the surface, it was pitched as targeting commercial greyhound racing. We have seen time and time again where the wording was broad enough to impact far more than its stated goal.
What Was at Risk
If this bill was left unchanged, it could have impacted hound hunting traditions, field trials and training events. It would have greatly impacted live-lure training for bird dogs and scent tracking and working dog development.
The way it was originally written the bill would have affected lawful practices used by hunters across the country every day. Practices that have been part of American sporting culture for generations. Many of our local hunting preserves here in Minnesota, like Traxler’s Hunting Preserve in Le Center, would have been greatly affected.
We here at 2 If By Sea Tactical support all form of exercising ones Second Amendment rights. We also support all forms of shooting sports. We are strong advocates for conservation and bills like this threaten those principals. We know not all threats to the Second Amendment are direct.
We see anti-gun language snuck through a myriad of different bills that continue to increase the burdens on citizens through various bills. Agriculture bills, such as this one, are no exception. Anti-gun politicians will put restricting language everywhere they can.
This builds up the bureaucracy within the Federal Government and it continues to build with each passing year. This is why gun owners must remain vigilant no matter what bill is being passed. We often see vague language that can be interpreted far beyond original intent inserted into these bills.
Who Stepped In
In this instance we thankfully had lawmakers who caught the issue in time. Led by Glenn Thompson (R, PA), Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee. He led Congress to act on removing or correcting the problematic language.
By spearheading this change he helped protect lawful hunting practices and preserve working dog traditions. The natural outcome from this is another check on unnecessary federal overreach, something we should all be concerned about.
The Bigger Pattern
This situation highlights something gun owners and hunters need to stay aware of. We need to understand that the fight isn’t just about firearms—it’s about the entire outdoor lifestyle. We have seen everything from hunting methods, to training practices, and land use policies come under attack. All of it can be impacted by legislation that isn’t even labeled as “gun control.”
What Comes Next
The Farm Bill is still moving through Congress, and changes can happen quickly. We must remain vigilant and ensure that nothing is added back in. This isn’t over yet and will not be until the bill has completed its move through capitol building and made its way to the President’s desk.
This was a quiet but important victory. It proves that without action, a poorly written provision could be devastating. This is an excellent reminder on why we all need to stay engaged. Sometimes the biggest threats aren’t the ones making headlines—they’re the ones buried in the fine print.
