Ruger & Beretta Strike Deal — What It Means for American Gun Owners

Beretta and Ruger Firearms Logo

We are seeing a drama play out in the gun world the likes of which a Netflix documentary would have you riveted to the screen. In a move that started as a quiet corporate power play, just turned into a full-blown partnership.

Depending on how this unfolds, it could reshape part of the firearms industry. Sturm, Ruger & Co. and Beretta Holding have officially reached a strategic cooperation agreement after months of tension behind the scenes.

The atmosphere between these brands until just now was frosty at best. Beretta had quietly built up nearly a 10% stake in Ruger. This triggered concerns and defensive moves from the American manufacturer. This even included discussion of a “poison pill” strategy to block a potential takeover.

Those fears, for now, seem to be put to rest, however. Both of these companies are now working together instead of against each other. This is a huge win for the firearm community as both of these companies are large power players in the gun world. A fight among them would only weaken the gun world.

The Deal Breakdown

Under the agreement Beretta can increase ownership to up to 25% of Ruger. They can nominate up to two board members. Most importantly, they agree not to pursue a takeover battle for at least three years. This gives Ruger operational independence.

What does all this mean? It means that Beretta is not attempting to buy out Ruger, but enter into a controlled partnership.

It did raise a few eyebrows when we saw a foreign company increasing its stake in a major American firearms manufacturer. Must of us, including this author, were unsure of that to think about the whole operation.

Ruger is the largest manufacturer of firearms in the United States. Beretta, one of the largest manufacturers in the world, have major impacts and stakes in the civilian firearm world. Beretta’s move to acquire Ruger stock was a major shift as Ruger is one of the only publicly traded firearm companies in the world.

The Business Reality

At its core, this move is strategic. Beretta is one of the oldest firearms companies in the world, over 500 years of history, and already has a major U.S. presence. With their ownership of brands like Beretta USA, Benelli, Stoeger, and Franchi, they represent a large segment of the firearms market in the US.

Ruger, on the other hand, is a blue-collar American powerhouse. They are known for their affordable firearms and mass production strength. They are a name brand in the US that has been around for more than 100 years and produce some of the finest examples in the country. The partnership of these two brands strengths the firearms market in the US and the world.

The Concerns

We do want to watch this partnership because there are legitimate questions. One of them is how much influence does 25% ownership really bring?  Will Ruger remain truly independent long-term?  Could this shift priorities away from American consumers?

The big elephant in the room is  what happens after those three years? In time all these questions will be answered. For now, we can celebrate the ending of hostilities between two huge firearm brands.

The Bigger Industry Trend

This isn’t happening in a vacuum. The firearms industry has been consolidating for years. We have recently seen CZ Group acquiring Colt for instance. Increased global competition for defense and civilian markets have driven a mass consolidation of the firearms market. This Ruger-Beretta agreement fits right into that trend.

What This Means for You

For right now not much changes. We will still see Ruger being the Ruger we know and love. Beretta will still be Beretta. However, long-term, it remains to be seen. We could possibly see some product collaboration and innovation out of this. We could also see in three years Beretta attempt to take over Ruger entirely.

Regardless what happens, we here at

will be watching closely. We are excited for to powerhouses to join forces and as long as it makes things more competitive, we will be supportive.
