A new player in firearm technology is attempting to bring “smart gun” features into the personal defense market. Lodestar Technology recently announced the release of its LNK9, a 9mm handgun that incorporates biometric sensors, PIN access, and a companion app
designed to manage user settings.
The company describes the LNK9 as a “compact crossover” pistol—featuring a full-size frame with a compact slide—and capable of accepting either 17-round or 10-round magazines, depending on local restrictions.
However, what sets the firearm apart from traditional handguns is its integrated biometric authentication system, which Lodestar says allows the firearm to remain secure while still being quickly accessible to authorized users.
Biometric and PIN Access

The LNK9 features a biometric sensor embedded directly into the grip panel. When an authorized fingerprint is recognized, the firearm activates and becomes ready to fire. According to Lodestar, the system can store up to 50 authorized fingerprints, allowing multiple users—such as family members—to access the firearm if necessary.
In addition to fingerprint access, the pistol can also be activated using a PIN code, providing an alternative method of authentication if biometric recognition is unavailable. Lodestar cofounder and CTO Ginger Chandler described the pistol as a significant step forward in firearm safety.
“The LNK9 represents a major leap forward in personal protection. By embedding advanced biometric safeguards directly into a proven platform, we’ve created a firearm that’s as secure as it is reliable.”
Built-In Technology and Features
The LNK9 includes several modern features designed to integrate technology directly into the firearm platform. LED indicators display information such as:
Authentication status
Charging level
Whether the firearm is ready to fire

The fingerprint recognition system can also be configured for left- or right-hand operation, and the magazine release is reversible, allowing the firearm to accommodate different user preferences. The pistol is rechargeable and designed to charge alongside other personal electronics, similar to a smartphone or tablet.
Privacy and Security Concerns
Smart gun technology has long been a controversial topic within the firearms community. Critics often raise concerns about reliability, cybersecurity risks, and potential government mandates for biometric firearms. Lodestar says its system was designed specifically to address many of those concerns. According to the company:
All biometric data and PIN information are stored locally on the firearm’s hardware
The firearm does not connect to the cloud
There is no GPS tracking capability
Only the owner can authorize or remove users
Lodestar states that this approach ensures complete owner control and privacy while preventing outside interference with the firearm.
A New Direction in Firearm Technology
The introduction of biometric firearms reflects a broader push within parts of the industry to explore ways to integrate modern technology with traditional firearm design. At 2 If By Sea Tactical, we believe that firearm owners should have choices when it comes to the tools they rely on for personal protection. While some gun owners may welcome additional safety technology, others may prefer the simplicity and proven reliability of traditional designs.
Ultimately, the market—and gun owners themselves—will determine whether smart gun technology becomes a widely adopted option or remains a niche product. The LNK9 currently carries a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $979.99, placing it within the range of many modern defensive handguns.
As with any new firearm technology, time, testing, and real-world performance will determine whether innovations like the LNK9 gain widespread acceptance among responsible gun owners.
