Virginia Pushes Sweeping Gun Bans — A Warning for the Rest of the Country

AR-15 Rifle
Virginia is moving to ban the most commonly owned firearms and accessories in the U.S.

The Commonwealth of Virginia—once known as the birthplace of American liberty and the home of the Bill of Rights—is now at the center of one of the most aggressive pushes against the Second Amendment in recent history.

In just 60 days, lawmakers in Richmond advanced more than 15 pieces of anti-gun legislation, fundamentally reshaping the legal landscape for millions of law-abiding gun owners. At the center of it all are two bills: SB 749 and HB 217.

The “Assault Weapons” Ban at the Center of It All

These two nearly identical bills now sit on the desk of Governor Abigail Spanberger, who has already made it clear she intends to sign them into law. If enacted, these bills would:

  • Ban the sale, transfer, and manufacture of commonly owned semi-automatic firearms

  • Target rifles, pistols, and shotguns based on cosmetic features

  • Restrict standard-capacity magazines over 15 rounds

In short, this legislation directly targets some of the most commonly owned firearms in America—the very tools millions rely on for self-defense, training, and lawful use.

A Rapid Shift in Power — and Policy

This didn’t happen overnight. Following the 2025 election cycle, Virginia saw, a shift in the governor’s office, consolidation of power in the legislature, and immediate movement on long-standing gun control priorities.

Within hours of gaining control, lawmakers began introducing and fast-tracking legislation—moving it through committees and onto the governor’s desk at a pace rarely seen. For comparison, similar legislation was defeated in New Mexico just weeks ago . It was also vetoed in Virginia last year by the previous administration. The difference now is simple: political control.

What These Bills Actually Do

Despite being framed as “public safety” measures, the structure of SB 749 and HB 217 tells a different story. The bills define “assault firearms” based on features like:

  • Threaded barrels

  • Adjustable or folding stocks

  • Pistol grips

  • Barrel shrouds

These are common, standard features found on modern firearms—not indicators of criminal intent. The legislation also targets magazines holding more than 15 rounds—what most gun owners would consider standard capacity, not “high capacity.”

The Bigger Picture: Policy vs. Reality

One of the most overlooked facts in this debate is how firearms are actually used in crime. According to FBI data:

  • Rifles account for a small fraction of violent crime

  • More homicides are committed with hands, fists, and knives than with rifles

Yet the focus remains on banning specific types of firearms based on appearance and configuration—not on addressing the root causes of violent crime.

Why This Matters Beyond Virginia

At 2 If By Sea Tactical, we’re not just watching Virginia—we’re watching the playbook. Because what’s happening there is not isolated. States across the country—including Minnesota—are seeing similar “assault weapon” and magazine restrictions.  Even here in Minnesota we are seeing expanding definitions of regulated firearms  and increased pressure on lawful ownership. Virginia is simply further along the same path.

What Comes Next

If these bills are signed into law, they will almost certainly face immediate legal challenges. Recent court decisions have already begun pushing back on:

  • Magazine bans

  • Feature-based firearm restrictions

  • Arbitrary classifications of “assault weapons”

But legal battles take time—and in the meantime, laws like these can reshape entire markets and restrict rights for years.

What’s happening in Virginia is more than just legislation. It’s a shift in how the Second Amendment is being treated at the state level from a protected right to a regulated privilege. Once that shift happens, it doesn’t stay contained, it spreads. Virginia may be the headline today—but it’s a warning for gun owners everywhere. Stay informed. Stay engaged. And understand that these fights are no longer isolated—they’re national.
