Virginia’s Fight Is Minnesota’s Warning

Norfolk County DA Ramin Fatehi (D)
Norfolk County DA Ramin Fatehi (D) Blames Gun Owners for the Old Dominion Attack

A tragic and politically charged shooting in Old Dominion University has once again been used by anti-gun officials to push a familiar narrative: blame firearms, ignore the failures that actually enabled the violence.

However, if you look past the rhetoric, a very different story emerges—and it’s one that gun owners in Minnesota should be paying very close attention to.

The Real Story Behind the Headlines

Norfolk, VA
Old Dominion University is located in Norfolk, VA

In the Virginia case, the attacker was not a law-abiding gun owner. He was a previously convicted individual tied to terrorism. He was also released early from prison and able to obtain a firearm through illegal means.

Meanwhile, another individual connected to the case had previously been investigated for illegal gun trafficking—and was never prosecuted. This isn’t a failure of gun laws. It’s a failure of enforcement.

Yet, instead of addressing those failures, political leaders immediately turned to the same talking points—claiming America has a “gun problem” while ignoring the breakdown of the justice system that allowed this to happen in the first place.

What Actually Stopped the Attack

Here’s the part you won’t hear emphasized enough, the attack didn’t end because of a law. It ended because people took action. Unarmed ROTC cadets stepped in and stopped the attacker—at great personal risk—preventing even greater loss of life.  That reality cuts directly against the narrative that disarming citizens makes communities safer.

Virginia’s Response: More Laws Targeting the Wrong People

Despite clear evidence that the attacker broke existing laws and that the system failed to act on known threats, Illegal firearm access—not legal ownership—was the issue. Virginia lawmakers are now pushing some of the most aggressive gun control measures in the state’s history.

These proposals target law-abiding gun owners, concealed carriers, firearm businesses, and everyday citizens exercising constitutional rights. Never the criminals. Never repeat offenders. Not those who actually commit violent acts.

Minnesota: Watching the Same Playbook Unfold

At 2 If By Sea Tactical, we’re covering what’s happening in Virginia closely—because Minnesota is heading down the same road. We are already seeing expanding restrictions on commonly owned firearms. Increased pressure for “assault weapon” bans, red flag law discussions. We are also seeing growing attempts to regulate lawful ownership rather than criminal behavior.

The strategy is identical. First step use a tragic event. Second, push emotional narratives. Third, pass sweeping laws targeting lawful citizens. Fourth, ignore enforcement failures. Virginia isn’t an isolated case—it’s a preview.

The Bigger Truth

Criminals do not follow laws. They steal firearms, buy them illegally, and ignore restrictions entirely. Meanwhile, new legislation is aimed squarely at people who follow the law. It hurts people who pass background checks and train and carry responsibly. That disconnect is the core issue—and it’s one that keeps repeating across the country.

Why This Matters Right Now

Minnesota gun owners cannot afford to ignore what’s happening elsewhere. What’s unfolding in Virginia shows exactly how quickly things can escalate. A single incident sparks a coordinated political response and a rapid push for sweeping restrictions. By the time most people realize what’s happening—it’s already law.

Virginia’s fight is not just Virginia’s fight. It’s a warning. For Minnesota, it’s a glimpse of what could be next if gun owners stay silent. We here at 2 If By Sea Tactical, continue tracking these developments—both in Virginia and here at home.  We believe protecting the Second Amendment requires staying informed, engaged, and ready to act. Because the pattern is clear. The question is whether people recognize it in time.
