Australian Northern Territory Resists Proposed Firearms Restrictions

After the deadly terror attack at Bondi Beach near Sidney, Australia on December 15th, 2025, the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised more Gun Control. This is despite an already strict regime enacted after a 1996 mass shooting attack in Port Aurthur. In typical fashion after the 1996, the Howard Government enacted the National Firearms Agreement and instigated a national “buyback scheme”.
The Australian government has since this point continuously restricted guns to the point getting them is onerous and restrictive. Semi-automatic firearms are nearly completely outlawed and conceal carry in Australia almost impossible to obtain. Australia has continuously taken a harsh and European stance on guns. Since there is no 2nd Amendment protecting the citizens’ right to self-defense, the state is given carte blanch to remove them as they see fit.
Not all of Australia is on board with this however, as the Northern Territory has come out resisting the calls for more Gun Control. This does not mean that the Northen Territory takes a view on firearms in line with the 2nd Amendment, but it does show a growing fissure between more liberal states and conservative ones around the world.
This has echoes of Canada where Alberta recently pushed back utilizing the Sovereignty Laws to stop new Gun Control pushes out of Ottawa. We are starting to see some real fracturing all over the world as it pertains to the right of self-defense. This highlights our Founding Father’s wisdom in enshrining the right for self-defense from a tyrannical government in our Foudning Document.
Without this right being enshrined, even here we certainly would have seen our right evaporate as they have in Europe, Canada, Australia, and many other countries. This has allowed governments like those in Australia to impose restrictions on speech that is subjective to the moment. Our rights here in America are constantly under attack and we must use these moments to thank our Founders for seeing this and guarding against it, while also fighting to restore the rights that have been eroded over time.
