Gun Sales Surge as Virginia Ban Looms — Americans Respond in Real Time

Gun sales skyrocket nationwide.

As sweeping gun control measures move closer to becoming law in Virginia, Americans—especially Virginians—are responding the way they always have when rights are threatened, they’re heading to the gun counter.

A Nationwide Uptick — With Virginia Leading the Charge

According to FBI background check data, March 2026 saw over 2.2 million checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. After adjustments by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, that translates to approximately:

  • 1.41 million likely retail firearm sales

  • A 1.9% increase over March 2025

On the surface, that’s steady growth. However, the real story is happening in Virginia.

Virginia Sales Skyrocket 70%

As Governor Abigail Spanberger considers signing a sweeping package of gun control bills—including bans on commonly owned semi-automatic firearms and standard-capacity magazines—Virginia residents are reacting fast.

  • 79,383 background checks in March 2026

  • Up from 46,659 in March 2025

  • A staggering 70% increase year-over-year

This follows a 55% spike in February. This isn’t random. It’s a direct response to legislation.

“Voting With Their Wallets”

Industry analysts are calling it exactly what it looks like a clear signal from the public. Virginians aren’t waiting to see what happens—they’re acting now, while they still can. This is not a new pattern. Historically, whenever major gun control legislation is proposed or expected firearm sales increase, first-time buyers enter the market, and existing owners expand their collections.

It’s a predictable response to uncertainty—and a reflection of how seriously many Americans take their Second Amendment rights.

NFA Items Exploding in Popularity

Beyond standard firearm sales, another trend is impossible to ignore: NFA-regulated items are booming. 206,871 NFA forms processed in March 2026. That is up 121% from March 2025. This surge comes after the long-standing $200 tax on items like suppressors was effectively eliminated earlier this year.

To put growth into perspective:

  • 2010: ~285,000 suppressors registered

  • 2026: Over 5.7 million registered

That’s not just growth—it’s a massive shift in consumer demand.

What This Tells Us

At 2 If By Sea Tactical, we look at trends—not just headlines. The trend here is clear when lawmakers move to restrict rights, people respond immediately. Not with press releases. Not with polls but with action.

While Virginia is currently the focal point, this isn’t just a Virginia story. States like Minnesota and others are considering similar bans.  States that want to follow in Virginia’s footsteps are watching how Virginia’s legislation plays out and will follow the same policy blueprint. If history is any indicator, what happens in one state rarely stays there.

Numbers don’t lie. A 70% spike in firearm purchases isn’t about trends, hobbies, or seasonal demand. It’s about urgency. It’s about uncertainty. It’s about millions of Americans recognizing that rights—once restricted—are rarely returned without a fight.

Virginia is showing us exactly how fast things can change. Just as importantly, how quickly people respond when they do.
